Companies across Europe hire design and development teams in Kosovo for the shared time zone, the languages and the value. Here is what to expect, how AI is changing the work, and how to choose a partner.
This guide is for companies weighing a design and development partner in Kosovo, whether you are in Germany, Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe, or a Kosovo business choosing a local team. It covers why companies hire here, the ways to work together, what AI changes about outsourced development, and how to check a team before you sign.
Why companies hire software teams in Kosovo
Kosovo has a young, growing technology sector and a long-standing link with Central Europe. For a client in Zurich, Munich or Vienna, a few practical points make working together straightforward:
- The same time zone. Kosovo runs on Central European Time, so working hours, meetings and release windows line up with Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
- The euro. Kosovo uses the euro, which keeps quotes and invoices simple for clients in the eurozone. Swiss clients can usually be invoiced in francs; we accept EUR, USD and CHF.
- Languages. English is the working language of most technology teams here, and German is common among people who have lived or studied in Germany or Switzerland. Our team works in English, German and Albanian.
- Short travel. There are direct flights to Prishtina from many German and Swiss cities, so a kickoff workshop or a project review in person is easy to arrange.
- Value. Rates are generally lower than in Germany or Switzerland, which lets a budget cover more design, testing or support. The lowest quote is rarely the best one, so compare scope and process as well as price.
Three ways to work with a Kosovo team
How you engage a team matters as much as where it is. Most collaborations take one of three forms.
A project with a fixed scope
You agree the deliverables, milestones and budget before work starts: a website, a web application, a mobile app or an internal tool. This suits work with a clear end point. A focused marketing website typically takes us one to two weeks; larger web and mobile products take one to two months or more, depending on scope.
A dedicated team
Designers and developers work with your team on an agreed roadmap and capacity, inside your tools, repositories and review process. This suits continuing product work where you set the priorities. Agree who directs the work, who reviews code and designs, and how capacity changes before onboarding starts.
Ongoing support
After a launch, a support agreement covers maintenance, security and dependency updates, monitoring and smaller improvements. Many clients start with a project and continue with support or a dedicated team.
How AI changes outsourced development
AI has changed how software gets built, and it should change what you ask a development partner.
What AI speeds up
AI coding assistants now take on a large share of routine work: boilerplate code, tests, documentation, data migrations and first drafts of interfaces. In a team that uses them well, more of the budget goes to the parts that need judgement, and first releases arrive sooner. A focused first release of a mobile app now takes us one to two months from agreed scope to store submission. We use AI coding assistants in our own design and development work, and every change is still reviewed and tested by a developer before it ships.
What still needs people
AI does not decide what to build. Product decisions, user research, interface design, architecture, security, and code review still depend on experienced people. A team that hands those to a tool tends to ship faster at first and slower later, when the shortcuts surface.
Questions to ask about AI
- Which AI tools does the team use, and for which tasks?
- Is AI-generated code reviewed and tested like any other code?
- Is your source code and data kept out of tools that train on it?
- Who owns the output, including code and designs produced with AI?
- How is the time saved reflected in the schedule or the cost?
Hiring a team for an AI project
AI also changes what companies ask teams to build. Workflow automation and AI assistants can route records, find information across systems and prepare drafts for a person to approve. These projects go best when they start small.
- Start with one well-defined workflow. Map the current task, its inputs, outputs and exceptions, and agree how you will judge whether a pilot is useful.
- Not every automation needs AI. Rules handle tasks with predictable inputs; AI helps with language and unstructured information. A good team assesses the task before choosing the tools.
- Agree permissions and human review. Decide what the system may read, draft or change, and which actions need a person’s approval.
- List the running costs. Model fees, API usage, hosting and subscriptions belong in the proposal, separate from the build.
- Agree ownership. Settle who owns the accounts, who handles exceptions and who monitors the workflow after handover.
Our AI automation and agents work follows this pattern: a pilot with clear acceptance criteria, agreed permissions and running costs reviewed before the build.
How to choose a software company in Kosovo
Most studios can show attractive screenshots. These checks tell you more:
- Live work. Ask for links to products that are in use, not only images, and for the team’s role in each one.
- References. Speak to a recent client, ideally one in your country or industry.
- Reviews on directories. Clutch, GoodFirms and similar sites show verified client reviews; look at how recent they are.
- The company itself. Kosovo businesses are listed in the Kosovo Business Registration Agency (ARBK). Check the legal name and address on the contract.
- Contract and ownership. The agreement should state who owns the code, designs and accounts, and how handover works if the engagement ends.
- Data protection. If your users are in the EU or Switzerland, ask how personal data is handled, where it is stored and which processors are involved.
- Communication. Agree the language, the meeting rhythm and your main contact before the project starts.
- In-house or subcontracted. Ask who will actually do the work. Our team is fully in-house.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hire a Kosovo-based agency for a large software project?
Yes, if the team has delivered similar work. Ask for comparable projects, the size of the team that delivered them and how they were supported after launch. Our work includes a property platform with a website, a client app and an agent CRM on one API for Domino Real Estate.
Do software agencies in Kosovo provide dedicated development teams?
Many do. We provide dedicated designers and developers who work in your tools and codebase on an agreed roadmap and capacity.
Can Kosovo agencies build mobile apps and SaaS products?
Yes. We build iOS and Android apps, web applications and first versions of SaaS products. Our guide to mobile app development explains the process, timelines and costs.
Which languages and hours do Kosovo teams work in?
Most teams work in English, and many also in German. Kosovo is on Central European Time; our office hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00.
Is it cheaper to hire a team in Kosovo?
Rates are generally lower than in Germany or Switzerland. The useful comparison is the full proposal: scope, process, testing, support and who owns the result.
